John's Hero King

I heard that John's Hero King of Brooklyn NY had opened a Florida location with the "world's best heroes," so I thought I would give it a try. I was expecting your standard Italian sub shop fare that we are used to here in South Florida but not so. John's specialty hero is the roast beef with "muutz," (mozzarello,) onions, and gravy.

We took a few minutes to look over the menu and after a sample of their breaded chicken, Michelle settled on a chicken parmigiana hero less the roll. I tried the house specialty, with "Muutz," onions, and black gravy. We complimented with a side order of potato croquettes: mashed potatoes encased with a light crunchy breaded coating.

The roast beef hero was good but didn't knock my socks off. I'm not really a roast beef kind of guy but selected it because it is the signature sub. And it was a good substitution for the all Italian meat with cheese, high sodium and cholesterol , artery clogging sub that I most enjoy. Michelle enjoyed the chicken, took half home and said it was even better the next day. The sub rolls are about two feet long, cut in half is a large and half of that is a regular. They accommodated my appetite by making a custom three-quarter roll. Soft with a hard crust, it tasted like a bialy only long instead of round. I learned the rolls are half baked in Brooklyn then sent down here. It must be the water.

The staff was genuinely friendly and attentive and offered samples to help us decide what to order. It had the "Cheers" atmosphere, where everyone's your friend. They have indoor and outdoor seating and offer delivery which was of interest to Michelle. The bathroom was not the cleanest in the world.

If you love a good roast beef hero, smothered with onions, gravy, and "muutz," check out John's on Hallandale Beach Blvd. I'm going back to John's to try one of their Italian Godfather heroes. Maybe I'll see you there. In any event be sure to tell them you read about it on the White Plate Special.
